A Better Path Forward: Support Resources for Injury Survivors

When you are injured and unable to work, the financial pressure can feel overwhelming. Medical bills, rent, childcare — everything keeps moving even when your life has been put on pause. We understand, and we are here to help guide you through this time with dignity and protection.

Before considering a lawsuit loan or “pre-settlement funding,” we want you to know the real risks and a safer, more community-focused path forward.

Why Personal Injury Lawsuit Loans Are Risky

Lawsuit lenders often target injured individuals during their most stressful moments — and while these loans may sound like a lifeline, they can become extremely costly.

We recommend avoiding them because:

  • Very high interest rates — Many pre-settlement loans charge steep, compounding interest. A small loan can quickly turn into thousands owed.
  • Limited consumer protections — These loans are not regulated like banks or credit cards, leaving consumers vulnerable.
  • Repayment comes out of your settlement first — When your case resolves, the lender gets paid before you do, sometimes leaving very little.
  • Added emotional and financial stress — Instead of offering relief, these loans often create more pressure during an already difficult recovery.

Your focus should be on healing — not on debt that grows while you recover.

Safer Funding Options

Crowdfunding (GoFundMe or similar)

Community support can be a powerful and dignified solution for short-term financial needs.

Why it works

  • No repayment required
  • Allows your community to take part in your healing journey
  • Gives you control and transparency over your needs

How to set up a GoFundMe

  1. Go to GoFundMe.com
  2. Select Start a GoFundMe
  3. Write a short description, including:
    1. What happened
    2. How the injury affects your ability to work or care for yourself/family
    3. What support is needed (rent, childcare, medical bills, transportation, etc.)
  4. Add a photo and brief updates
  5. Share with trusted friends and family or ask someone close to you to post on your behalf

If you would like help writing your campaign description, our foundation team can assist.

Community & Assistance Programs

Depending on your situation, you may qualify for:

  • Short-term disability aid
  • SNAP food assistance
  • Utility and rental assistance programs
  • Faith-based and neighborhood support groups
  • Local nonprofit emergency aid programs
  • Transportation and childcare support programs
  • Victim compensation resources (if applicable)

We maintain a network of community partners and can help connect you with appropriate support.

Support From Family & Friends

Support does not always have to be financial. Loved ones can help by offering:

  • Meal trains
  • Rides to medical appointments
  • Childcare help

  • Temporary bill assistance
  • Emotional support and check-ins

Sometimes the most meaningful help comes directly from community.
